SADC Gender Monitor 2006

SADC Gender Monitor 2006 provides an assessment of the progress, challenges and way forward for the SADC region towards meeting its obligations on achieving gender equality and equity. This edition updates those published in 1999 and 2001. An audit conducted in 2005 reveals gaps between women and men in decision-making, constitutional and legal rights, economic empowerment, gender violence, health, HIV and AIDS, and education; and constraints in institutional infrastructure for gender and development. The analysis is presented in two parts. Part I Current Situation covers “Where we are now”, while Part II Future Priorities and Way Forward shows “Where we are going”. The Head of SADC Gender Unit says in her Foreword that southern Africa has relatively good results in implementation of gender commitments but a lot still needs to be done to address the critical areas of concern set in the Beijing Platform For Action (1995), and the SADC Declaration on Gender and Development (1997) and Addendum (1998).
