{"id":1495,"date":"2013-05-01T08:32:44","date_gmt":"2013-05-01T08:32:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sardc.net\/en\/?p=1495"},"modified":"2019-03-04T12:17:16","modified_gmt":"2019-03-04T12:17:16","slug":"1495","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sardc.net\/en\/southern-african-news-features\/1495\/","title":{"rendered":"Southern African researchers contribute to SADC policy review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>SANF 13 No 12<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nResearchers from southern Africa are meeting in Zimbabwe to contribute to the mid-term review of the SADC\u2019s regional development plan.<br \/>\nThe 15-year plan was approved by member states of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in 2003 as a blueprint for regional integration and development, and was launched in 2004.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) is being implemented in five-year phases that commenced in 2005, providing policy direction to SADC programmes and activities as well as aligning the strategic objectives and priorities of the region with its long-term goals.<\/p>\n<p>The Regional Researchers Workshop on the RISDP Mid-term Review is expected to discuss strategies to deepen regional integration and address emerging challenges such as climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main purpose of the workshop includes enabling researchers from research institutions in Member States to use their expertise and knowledge to make a direct input into the RISDP review process, and enriching the scope and depth of issues around the implementation of the RISDP,\u201d reads part of a statement released by the workshop organizers.<\/p>\n<p>The Southern African Research and Documentation Centre (SARDC) is organizing the two-day consultative workshop in collaboration with the SADC Secretariat, supported by the German development agency, GIZ.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop is intended to contribute to the RISDP independent mid-term review process conducted by the Trade and Development Studies Centre (Trades Centre) in Harare.<\/p>\n<p>This independent review follows a desk assessment of the RISDP undertaken by the SADC Secretariat in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The desk assessment, based on the RISDP Implementation Framework 2005-2010, revealed \u201csatisfactory levels of RISDP implementation\u201d during the five-year period.<\/p>\n<p>The assessment noted that all sectors were able to reach most of the outputs and targets, either fully or partially, within the stated timeframes.<\/p>\n<p>For example, SADC successfully launched its Free Trade Area in 2008, which has improved intra-regional trade by facilitating the movement of goods and services across member countries.<\/p>\n<p>While the desk assessment provided an overview of the implementation status of sectors and targets, the broader independent review is expected to provide a more comprehensive analysis.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers workshop offers an opportunity for key stakeholders and researchers to reflect on the main issues and priorities for the next phase of implementation, such as energy and infrastructure development, climate change, gender equality, food security, and strengthening intra-regional trade.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop on 9-10 May is expected to contribute towards strengthening a regional agenda appropriate for the 21st century, providing a policy, legal and institutional framework for decision-makers that can address fundamental development challenges such as employment, poverty and inequality.<\/p>\n<p>The permanent secretary in the Ministry of Regional Integration and International Cooperation in Zimbabwe, Tadeus Chifamba, is expected to open the workshop to be attended by some 35 researchers and experts from across the SADC region. <strong><em>sardc.net<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- Widget Shortcode --><div id=\"text-14\" class=\"td_block_template_1 widget widget_text widget-shortcode area-arbitrary \">\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><hr \/>\r\n<span style=\"color: #993300;\">\r\n<p><strong>Southern African News Features  offers a reliable source of regional information and analysis on the Southern  African Development Community, and is provided as a service to the SADC  region.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>This article may be reproduced  with credit to the author and publisher.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<\/span>\r\n\r\n<p><em>SANF is produced by the Southern  African Research and Documentation Centre (SARDC), which has monitored regional  developments since 1985. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
