John Justin Musukuma

Born on 25th October 1944

Died on 19th October 2009

It is with deep regret that the Southern African Broadcasting Association reports the death of our former Secretary General, Mr. John Justin Musukuma, 64, who passed away in Lusaka, Zambia, on 19 October 2009.

Mr. Musukuma was an accomplished journalist with wide experience in print media, broadcasting, and newspaper management. He served as Secretary General of SABA from 1996 to 2006. In this capacity he laid the foundations of the Association and worked diligently to advance public service broadcasting and media development in the counties of the Southern African Development Community. His term of office ended in 2006 when the late President Levy Mwanawasa, of Zambia, appointed Mr. Musukuma as a special assistant for press and public relations at State House.

In a statement, the incumbent President Rupiah Banda said he was saddened by the death of Mr. Musukuma, whom he had decided to appoint as Zambia’s consular-designate to Russia because of “his dedication and hard work.”

Before joining SABA, John Musukuma had worked for various media institutions in Zambia, among them the Zambia Daily Mail, Mining Mirror, and the Times of Zambia, where he served as editor-in-chief. He also served as executive secretary for the Press Association of Zambia (PAZA).

He is survived by his wife Agnes, two daughters and a son.
