SARDC Profile
Vision SARDC is an independent regional information and documentation centre which seeks to enhance the effectiveness of key development processes in the region through the collection, production and dissemination of information, and enabling the capacity to generate and use information. Mission SARDC's objective is to improve the base of knowledge about economic, political, cultural and social developments, and their implications, by making information accessible to governments and policy makers, non-governmental organizations(NGOs), the private sector, regional and international organizations, development agencies, parliaments, and the media. PROFILE SARDC is an independent institution involved in the collection, analysis and dissemination of information about the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and its member states. SARDC provides information and analysis of current events through books, special reports and news features, fact sheets, newsletters, policy analysis, technical expertise, topical seminars, and other specialist services. SARDC Regional Documentation Centre prepares:
SARDC facilitates seminars, briefings and consultancies for information exchange on electoral processes, environmental issues, gender, human development, and information networking. SARDC conducts regional training programmes involving attachments and exchanges for southern African journalists, editors and documentalists. Since its inception in 1987, SARDC has improved and sustained an output of accessible, usable information, and has widely expanded the scope of subject matter. More than 500 individuals, organizations and networking partners in 46 countries receive SARDC's twice-monthly mailings while many government, ngo and media in various countries reproduce SARDC articles. SARDC's environment resource centre, The Musokotwane Environment Resource Centre for Southern Africa (IMERCSA),
IMERCSA is one of 26 collaborating centres worldwide working with UNEP on the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) reporting process. WOMEN IN DEVELOPMENT SOUTHERN AFRICA AWARENESS (WIDSAA) works with national partners in all SADC countries to produce gender profiles and raise awareness on gender issues. SUSTAINABLE DEMOCRACY organizes seminars on elections, democracy and governance, and produces a newsletter and factsheets to share regional experiences. EDITORIAL/DOCUMENTATION produces newsletters with SADC and UNESCO assists in data base development, and provides editorial and publishing services. SARDC current three-year plan (1997-99) aims to:
SARDC has offices in Harare, Maputo and Dar es Salaam; and partner organisations in all SADC member states. Management and structure reflects the southern African region, including partnerships, exchanges and networking. The Centre places emphasis on capacity-building and human resource development; and on an inclusive process of regional information collection and exchange. SARDC staff number over 50 people from SADC countries in a range of professions; and the contacts data bases offer access to other professional expertise in the region. SARDC undertakes national, regional and international consultancies. SARDC is a non-profit foundation funded through consultancies and special projects.
