SOEPROZ PROGRAMME PARTNERS

SADC - Southern African Development Community

SADC is made up of 14 members states; Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Seychelles, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Being an intergovernmental organisation, SADC is structured into development sectors whose respective coordination is entrusted to the governments of specific member states. The government of Lesotho hosts the SADC Environment and Land Management Sector (SADC-ELMS) responsible for overall coordination of environmental issues, and the SADC Water Sector Coordination Unit (SADC WSCU) whose vision is to attain sustainable, integrated planning, development, utilisation and management of water resources in the SADC region. The WSCU has the overall responsibility of coordinating water resources programmes and projects of the SADC water sector, including the Zambezi River Action Plan (ZACPLAN).

IUCN - The World Conservation Union

The World Conservation Union is the world's largest conservation organisation bringing together 76 states, 104 government agencies, 720 non-governmental organisations, 35 affiliates, and some 10,000 scientists and experts from 181 countries in a unique worldwide partnership. For more than half a century, IUCN has endeavoured to shape a just world that values and conserves nature. The IUCN Regional Office for Southern Africa (ROSA) based in Zimbabwe and with country offices in Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia, coordinates regional programmes that are implemented through partnerships with members and other key organisations in all the SADC countries except the Democratic Republic of Congo, Seychelles and Tanzania. The IUCN mission in southern Africa is to facilitate and strengthen an integrated approach for the sustainable and equitable use of natural resources and the conservation of biological diversity.

ZRA - Zambezi River Authority

The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) is a corporate body that is jointly owned by the Governments of Zambia and Zimbabwe and primarily mandated to operate, monitor and maintain the Kariba Dam, reservoir and any other installations owned by the Authority. In partnership with other organisations, the ZRA has been commissioned to undertake research, collect and process hydrological and environmental data of the Zambezi River and basin for the better performance of its functions, and ensure effective and efficient use of the waters and other resources of the Zambezi. Of particular interest is the Zambezi River Action Plan's Zambezi River Action Projects (ZACPRO) whose research findings are widely referred to and provided a good information base for this report.

SARDC - Southern African Research and Documentation Centre

SARDC is an independent institution whose primary mandate is to research, collect, analyse and disseminate information about the southern African region, with offices in Harare and Maputo. Under the Communicating the Environment Programme (CEP), SARDC established the Musokotwane Environment Resource Centre for Southern Africa (IMERCSA) whose objective is to bridge the environmental information gap by producing state-of-the-environment reports and providing researchers with up-to-date information on southern Africa's environment among other activities. IMERCSA coordinated the preparation of this report.

Sida - Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency

Sweden has, through Sida, been engaged for many years in the water sector, especially in rural water supply, sanitation and in the field of hydropower in developing countries. In southern Africa, Sida initiated in 1996 a three-year pilot programme with an overall objective to support integrated management of shared water resources in the SADC region. Programmes and projects, which receive either financial or technical support from Sida are of a regional nature, involving at least two SADC countries. All activities supported promote regional integration and cooperation. The programme is coordinated by the Swedish Embassy in Harare, Zimbabwe, on behalf of the Department for Natural Resources and the Environment at Sida Stockholm.
