The Zambezi river basin is the most shared in the southern African region and third largest in Africa after the Congo and the Nile. It drains a total area of 1.32 million sq. km, stretching across eight countries - Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The social and economic development of the basin states is dependent on the sustainable use and management of the basin's natural resources.
