Strengthening Disaster Information Management in Africa
Disaster management is one of the greatest development challenges facing
Africa. The devastating impact of disasters, natural and human-caused,
cuts across all sectors of society and the economy, and threatens to blunt
the expected achievements of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development
(NEPAD).
State of the Environment Zambezi Basin Phase II
The project aims at raising awareness about the state of the environment in
the Zambezi River Basin. Its objective is to increase the availability of
environmental information, and provide a well functioning distribution
channel, for the promotion of sustainable natural resource management in the
Zambezi basin among decision and policy makers at national, regional and
sectoral levels, legislators, media, environmental organisations, schools,
universities and other educational institutions and the public at large.
The project is implemented by CEP partners, and funded by the Swedish
International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). A network of
collaborating centres in all the eight Zambezi Basin countries supports the
project.
Limpopo River Basin Rapid Environmental Appraisal
This appraisal marks the initial stages of information gathering in preparation for a multi-year transboundary initiative to support the revised SADC Protocol on Shared Watercourses, and in particular the concept of Integrated Water Resources Management, which the protocol enshrines. The Appraisal is funded by USAID-RCSA through DATEX, and is implemented by SARDC-Imercsa in partnership with ZERO-Regional Environment Organisation.
State of the Environment Indicators Project
This is a SADC regional initiative to develop a core set of indicators for state of the environment assessment and reporting. The project uses internationally accepted criteria to develop, test and revise indicators for environmental reporting. SARDC-Imercsa and the Department of Environment and Tourism of South Africa are implementing the project.
Defining and Mainstreaming Environmental Sustainability in Water Resources Management in Southern Africa
This is the outcome of collaborative efforts by SADC ELMS, SADC Water Sector, IUCN-ROSA, SARDC, the Africa Water Resources Initiative and the Environment Department of the World Bank. The 336-page technical report and its 32-page summary, showcase the threats to southern Africa's precious water resources, and to the environment that sustains them.
State of the Environment in Southern Africa II
The CEP partners are in the process of producing a second state of the environment report for southern Africa. This SOE process seeks to, among other things, take stock of gains/losses in the condition of the environment following the publication of the first SOE report for southern Africa in 1994
Global Environment Outlook (GEO)
GEO is a response to the environmental reporting requirements of Agenda 21. The GEO process entails the production of a report every two years. A global network of collaborating centres coordinated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is at the core of the GEO process. SARDC-Imercsa is one such collaborating centre with responsibility over southern Africa.
Africa Environment Outlook
The AEO is derived from the GEO process and also coordinated by UNEP. It is a request by the African Ministerial Conference on Environment and Nature, and involves a network of collaborating centres including SARDC-Imercsa.
