SARDC Maputo Office FrontPage Databases
The SARDC office in Maputo has established a strong niche in human development reporting, based on the SARDC
methodology of quality work through wide consultation,
partnership and inclusion, and has produced for UNDP in
Mozambique, working with the National Institute of
Statistics and Eduardo Mondlane University, four National
Human Development Reports (NHDR) in Portuguese and English in the same volume:
- NHDR 1998, Peace and Economic Growth: Opportunities for Human Development;
- NHDR 1999, Economic Growth and Human Development: Progress, Obstacles and Challenges, which broke new ground with an analysis of the country's regions;
- NHDR 2000, Education and Human Development: Trajectory, Lessons and Challenges for the 21st Century;
- NHDR 2001, Gender, Women and Human Development: An Agenda for the Future.
- NHDR 2005, Reaching for the Millennium Development Goals.
The 1999 report won two citations from UNDP for Excellence in Participation and Policy Impact, and Excellence in Presentation and Design.
The Maputo office also runs a project to strengthen media coverage of elections by offering journalists the opportunity to familiarize with issues in different parts of the country, and through discussion forums. The office produces a monthly chronology of events in Mozambique, markets SARDC publications for Mozambique and Angola, contributes to all programmes including articles and reports on Mozambique in a regional context, supervises translations to Portuguese, and produces publications for other organizations.
SARDC Maputo aims to broaden the base of accessible information on socio-economic conditions in Mozambique, and to improve its image as a developing country with economic potential, and with opportunities for trade and investment. The office circulates regional and national information.
