SADC is a regional grouping of 14 countries, which include 12 continental and two island states. The regional grouping was formed in 1980 by nine continental member states as the Southern Africa Development Co-ordination Conference (SADCC), with the primary objective of reducing economic dependence on apartheid South Africa..full details

Developments in the water sector
For several years, even prior to 1980, SADC member states collaborated on shared water resources management. Various member states established numerous bilateral and multilateral agreements. Permanent technical committees met to discuss on a bilateral or multilateral level matters of mutual interest on the various river basins.. ..full details

Despite the challenges, these developments are a reflection of the concerted efforts being made to more efficiently utilize the water resources in southern Africa for the mutual benefit of the region. SADC has been responding positively to global trends as well as regional needs to sustainably use its limited water resources....full details
